Schedule Your ISO 50001 Gap AnalysisWhat Is an Energy Management System (EnMS)?
An Energy Management System (EnMS) is a systematic framework based on the ISO 50001:2018 standard that empowers organizations to establish energy policies, set targets, and achieve continuous efficiency improvements. Under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) 2024, affected installations are required to establish and maintain an EnMS to monitor energy intensity. Techikara provides end-to-end consultation to develop, document, and implement this system, preparing you for successful ISO 50001 implementation.
Why You Need This Service Now
Under EECA 2024, you must have a system to manage energy continuously. The law requires it.
- Mandatory Requirement: If your facility consumes >21,600 Gigajoules (GJ) per year (approx. 6 million kWh) or is a large office building (>8,000 sqm), the law requires you to implement energy management practices.
- The Penalty: Failure to comply with energy management regulations under the Act can result in fines ranging from RM20,000 to RM100,000.
- The Risk: Without a structured EnMS, your energy savings from audits will likely disappear within 12 months due to operational drift. An EnMS "locks in" the savings permanently.
Confusion Buster: ISO 50001 vs. EMGS
Many clients are confused between the International Standard (ISO) and the ASEAN Standard (EMGS). You generally only need to implement one, depending on your business goals.
| Feature | ISO 50001 | EMGS |
|---|---|---|
| Full Name | International Org. for Standardization | Energy Management Gold Standard |
| Recognition | Global / International | ASEAN / Regional |
| Focus | Management Framework & Policy | Performance & Actual Savings |
| Best For | MNCs, Exporters, Supply Chain Compliance | Facilities focused on "Star Ratings" |
Note: If your HQ requires global compliance, choose ISO 50001. If you want to be recognized for high-performance savings in Malaysia/ASEAN, choose EMGS. Techikara consults on both.

Your Next Steps
An EnMS is a system, but it needs a driver and periodic checks:
-
System Manager: The law requires a competent person to manage this system.

Performance Check: The system needs periodic technical verification.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. How long does it take to get ISO 50001 certified?
Typically 6 to 12 months. This includes Gap Analysis, Documentation, and the Implementation Phase (generating 3 months of data). Final Certification is optional as EECA does not make it compulsory.
2. Is ISO 50001 mandatory under EECA 2024?
The Act requires an EnMS framework. We may choose either ISO 50001 or EMGS. While obtaining the actual certificate is voluntary, adopting the framework is required for legal compliance.
3. Can Techikara Engineering issue the ISO 50001 Certificate?
No. Consultants build the system. Certificates are issued by a Certification Body (CB) like SIRIM. We guide you until you pass their audit.
4. What is the cost of an ISO 50001 consultation?
It varies by size and complexity, but it is often recoverable through energy bill savings. Studies show just having an EnMS can save at least 5% of energy.
5. We already have ISO 9001/14001. Is this easier?
Yes! ISO 50001 follows the same "High-Level Structure" (HLS). We can integrate Energy Management into your existing systems to save time.
6. Who needs to be involved in the EnMS?
Top Management support is mandatory. You also need an Energy Committee including Facility Managers, Production Managers, and Procurement Officers.
7. Does EnMS software come with this service?
No, but we can help you select the right monitoring tools. We often recommend digital monitoring hardware for real-time data.
8. What happens if we fail the certification audit?
With Techikara, we conduct a rigorous Internal Audit before the external auditor arrives to fix any "Non-Conformities" (NCRs) in advance.
9. How does EnMS differ from an Energy Audit?
An audit is a "snapshot" of efficiency. An EnMS is a "video" that ensures you stay efficient every single day, year after year.
10. Can we switch from EMGS to ISO 50001 later?
Yes. Since both are based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, foundational work done for one system is 80% applicable to the other.
