What Is MEPS Consultation?

Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) is the regulatory threshold that specifies the minimum level of energy efficiency a product must meet to be sold in Malaysia. Under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) 2024, manufacturers and importers of regulated electrical appliances must prove their products meet these standards and display the Energy Efficiency Label (Star Rating) issued by the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga). Techikara provides pre-certification consultation, technical report review, and assurance services to streamline your application and ensure market access.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Which appliances are currently regulated under MEPS in Malaysia?
The list is updated by Suruhanjaya Tenaga but currently includes Air Conditioners, Refrigerators, Domestic Fans, Televisions, Washing Machines, Microwave Ovens, Rice Cookers, and LED Lamps.

2. Can I use a test report from a foreign laboratory?
Yes, but only if the lab is accredited under ILAC-MRA and the test method aligns with Malaysian Standards (MS) or IEC standards accepted by Suruhanjaya Tenaga.

3. What happens if my product fails the MEPS requirement?
You cannot legally sell that specific model in Malaysia. You must either re-engineer the product to improve efficiency or withdraw it from the market application.

4. How is the Star Rating calculated?
It is based on the Energy Efficiency Factor (EEF). For example, for an air conditioner, it compares the Cooling Capacity to the Power Input. We perform these technical calculations for you.

5. Do I need a COA before I can import?
Yes. The Certificate of Approval (COA) from Suruhanjaya Tenaga is required for customs clearance for all regulated electrical goods.

6. Can Techikara guarantee my product gets 5 Stars?
We cannot change the physics of your product. However, we can predict the rating accurately and advise on what technical changes are needed to achieve 5 Stars before production begins.

7. How long does the approval process take?
Once the test report is ready, the ST approval may take several weeks. However, testing at a lab can take 1-2 months. We help manage this timeline effectively.

8. Is this different from SIRIM certification?
Yes. SIRIM often handles safety testing. MEPS is specifically for Energy Performance. You usually need both Safety and Performance test reports for full COA approval.

9. Can I sell a 1-Star product?
It depends on the appliance category. Some appliances have a "Minimum" star rating (e.g., must be at least 2 Stars) to be legally sold. We advise you on the current minimum thresholds.

10. Why should I hire a consultant instead of doing it myself?
A rejected application due to a technical error can delay your launch by months. We ensure your technical files are perfect the first time, saving you time and storage costs.
